A 2.5 billion-dollar envelope targets Ontario auto-industry jobs, while Unifor asks that Brampton not be forgotten.
A plan to counter American tariffs
According to Windsor News Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced an $8.7 billion partnership in Ottawa on October 21 for the steel and automotive sectors, both hard hit by American tariffs. Steel receives just over half of the envelope.

The money will support current jobs in the industry, including upgrading assembly lines and funding the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment. According to Mr. Carney, these investments help safeguard more than 120,000 direct jobs in the automotive sector.
Unifor keeps its eyes on Brampton
Unifor President Lana Payne views the announcement as a vote of confidence in the sector, but she is urging Ottawa to focus on sustaining assembly in Brampton, where Stellantis is considering selling the plant to Roshel. The city’s mayor, Patrick Brown, has called the possible sale a betrayal.
