A Growing Gap Between Vehicles and Know-How
As industry professionals, we too often notice a widening gap. The divide between the technical reality of modern vehicles and the fundamental knowledge possessed by the average technician is growing. The days when mechanics simply adjusted a carburetor with a flathead screwdriver are over. Today, a technician who does not understand the fundamental laws of electricity is a technician prone to repeated diagnostic errors.
Electronic Diagnosis: Reading a Code Is Not Diagnosing
The main challenge lies in understanding electrical circuits and communication networks. There is a fundamental difference between reading an error code on a scanner and performing a true diagnostic. Too many parts are replaced based on assumptions, due to the inability to verify circuit integrity, analyze a voltage drop, or interpret a signal on an oscilloscope. This lack of rigor in electrical analysis turns minor failures into exorbitant bills, and sometimes recurring problems for the customer.
Electric Vehicles: A New Reality, New Risks
The massive arrival of electric vehicles (EVs) only exacerbates this gap. Here, approximation is not just costly, it becomes dangerous. Working on high-voltage systems requires iron-willed discipline and a deep understanding of energy flows. You cannot improvise as an EV specialist just because you know how to repair gasoline engines.
Continuous Training: A Lifeline for Workshops
To address this skill gap, the solution is not in purchasing more advanced tools, but investing in people. It is essential to revalue advanced diagnostics and understand that ongoing training is not optional—it is an absolute necessity for the survival of our workshops.
