Did you know that the 3PMS symbol was born right here in Canada in the 1990s?

Winter tires were invented over 90 years ago in Finland by Nokian Tyres, and only few know that the 3PMS symbol was born right here in Canada in the 1990s when tire producers and global policy makers recognized the need to classify tires designed for winter driving. Canada took the lead on developing the global standard with ASTM F-1805 test method and 3PMS symbol, and since 1999 the test and the symbol have been used worldwide to distinguish tires designed for winter driving. The new Ice Grip test the industry introduced few years ago also assesses the tire’s capabilities to brake on icy surfaces. Tires passing this test present the Ice Grip symbol next to 3PMS, and these tires are now starting to hit the market. Both symbols are meant to enhance the consumer understanding of winter tire performance and differentiate the different winter performance qualities a winter tire can provide to the consumers.
