According to the latest data published by the Association of Electric Vehicle Owners of Quebec (AVÉQ) using statistics from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), the development of electromobility in Quebec experienced a slowdown in 2025 after the record growth seen in 2024.
By the end of 2025, there were 440,554 electric vehicles (EVs) registered in the province. This increase represents only +14,018 EVs added in the fourth quarter (+3.29 %) and +64,308 for the full year (+17.09 %). In relative terms, this is the weakest annual growth since 2014.
This slowdown is partly explained by the reduction of public incentives:
- the provincial Roulez Vert program cut subsidies for new EV purchases, and
- federal incentives ended early in 2025 before being announced again for February 2026 with a potential maximum rebate of $5,000.
As a result, although the market continues to grow, it is doing so at a more moderate pace than in 2024, when Quebec nearly doubled its new EV registrations.
The share of EVs in Quebec’s total vehicle fleet now stands at nearly 6 %, a threshold that could be exceeded as early as the first quarter of 2026. Focusing only on fully electric models (rather than plug-in hybrids), they made up the majority (about 67 %) of recent new registrations in the last quarter of 2025.
For managers of automotive and bodywork workshops, this slowdown suggests that the transition to a larger EV-owning customer base will continue but at a more gradual pace. It remains essential to plan investments in training, specialized tools, and adapted equipment, as growth remains positive even if less dynamic than in previous years.
With the return of federal incentives and the ongoing evolution of EV technology, 2026 could mark an important turning point — a strong signal for the repair and maintenance industry to anticipate future needs.
