How a hostile workplace will force staff to leave

New data reveals a worrying rise in toxic behavior in companies, as the war for talent forces these businesses to protect the well-being of their teams.

The Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll highlights the urgency of combating workplace hostility to prevent resignations. Three out of ten employees find their colleagues more aggressive today than they were a few years ago. This trend appears to be more pronounced among men (34%) than women (23%). In addition, 22% of people surveyed note an increase in aggressiveness, a key factor in disengagement.

Recruiters confirm the trend: 50% report an increase in inappropriate attitudes in recent years, and 74% regularly perceive toxic traits, including gossip (39%), unprofessional communication (27%), refusal to collaborate (24%), intrusive management (19%) and appropriation of other people’s work (19%).

Bill Stoller, CEO of Express Employment International, said: “Addressing toxic behaviour is key to attracting and retaining top talent. An unhealthy environment divides employees, encourages the departure of the most productive elements, and damages the company’s reputation.”
