The YPA Committee structures new subcommittees to accelerate workforce renewal in Canada’s automotive aftermarket.
AIA Canada published a strategic report on August 7, 2026 titled “The Global Technician Shortage: What Canada’s Automotive Aftermarket Can Learn from Other Markets.” The document analyzes solutions adopted by other countries — Northern Europe, Australia, Japan — to address the same crisis, and identifies best practices transferable to the Canadian context.
A problem that worsens year after year
The data is alarming: automotive technician turnover rates jumped by 65% in 2023, and 46% of those who left did so for better pay. Only 2.4% of automotive service technicians in Canada are women — a largely untapped labour pool. An aging trainer workforce and the increasing complexity of hybrid and electric vehicles further intensify the situation.
The YPA Committee mobilizes
Hitesh Patel, Chair of AIA Canada’s YPA Committee (2026-2028 mandate), announces new thematic subcommittees and shares a recap of the June 2026 Town Hall. The YPA Committee represents professionals under 45 and has initiatives to attract and retain the next generation.
