Successful sales representatives share certain personality traits. The four most important are:
- A balance between empathy and focus
- Motivation
- Optimism
- Accountability
Let’s look at how these characteristics can contribute to both professional and personal success.
Characteristic 1: Balancing Empathy and Focus
People with a strong ability to focus tend to be self-oriented. They are constantly focused on achieving their own goals.
On the other hand, empathetic people tend to put the well-being of others before their own. Highly empathetic individuals can be described as being more outwardly focused and attentive to others.
Empathy Through Listening
Being able to demonstrate empathy while remaining focused requires strong listening skills. In fact, one of the most important skills a sales representative can develop is effective listening. Many people hear without truly listening.
To listen effectively, you need to pay attention to the message being communicated and understand what you should do with that information. As an expert consultant, you must not only listen, but listen with the goal of fully understanding your client’s objectives.
Furthermore, the ability to understand another person’s perspective—their needs or interests—requires first and foremost an understanding of their background and reality.
For a sales representative, this means staying in control of the conversation and asking the right questions. An expert consultant should not be asking, “How does this affect me?” but rather, “What is the client really asking for? What problem are they trying to solve? And how can my product or service meet their current needs?”
Improving Focus
Having poorly defined goals often leads to poor performance and can result in a short career as a sales representative. People who lack focus are more likely to lose sight of or stray from their objectives. They also tend to give up on their targets too easily.
At the same time, working without a clear purpose is ineffective. Developing greater focus means improving your ability to move things forward and get results.
Setting clear, well-defined and achievable goals is essential to improving performance.
We will explore the other three characteristics—Motivation, Optimism and Accountability—in upcoming articles over the next few weeks.
