Winter Warning: Icy Roads Increase Collision Risk Without Blizzards

Winter driving conditions remain a major cause of vehicle collisions in Canada. According to CAA, 37 per cent of accidents occur during winter months, highlighting dangers from rain, ice and temperature changes.

Alexander Sala, dispatch supervisor with CAA North & East Ontario, explains: “When rain and ice mix, roads become deceptive. Black ice can appear quickly with dropping temperatures.”

Black ice, difficult to detect, forms on bridges, underpasses and shaded areas, particularly during early morning hours. It can develop even when air temperatures are above zero.

Drivers should slow down, avoid cruise control, brake steadily and maintain extra following distance. Night driving requires increased caution due to reduced visibility.

“Properly inflated winter tires improve traction in icy, wet conditions,” said Sala. One of the biggest challenges drivers face is managing traction effectively.
