CRM Collision Index: 68% of Canadian Shops Report Lower Profitability — Insurers Identified as Top Pressure

The inaugural CRM Collision Index, launched by Collision Repair Magazine in June 2026, paints a troubling picture of the financial health of Canada’s collision repair sector. The survey, conducted among 88 shop owners and managers from May 26 to June 8, found that 68% reported lower profitability than 12 months earlier. The top three contributing factors were insurer DRP program demands, rising labour costs, and uncompensated administrative work. Independents accounted for 40% of respondents, franchise and banner shops 36%, and MSOs 20%. The index will serve as a permanent quarterly barometer to track the state of Canada’s collision industry, with results from every major region of the country represented. For shop owners, the numbers provide concrete data on the daily pressures many have been feeling — and may support ongoing advocacy efforts with insurers and industry associations.
