A strategic figure at NAPA Auto Parts Canada for more than a decade, John O’Dowd is preparing to close a chapter marked by innovation, energy, and a deep understanding of the automotive industry. His retirement, planned for June, leaves behind a lasting impact within both NAPA and UAP.
An architect of marketing transformation
As Vice President of Marketing at NAPA Auto Parts Canada, John O’Dowd played a pivotal role in the company’s evolution. Leading a portfolio that includes national marketing, corporate banners, sales operations, and both automotive and heavy vehicle divisions, he helped align national strategy and modernize the customer experience. Under his leadership, NAPA accelerated its digital transformation, strengthened its market presence, and consolidated its status as a Canadian leader in automotive parts.
A career built in the industry
Before joining NAPA in 2014, O’Dowd had already built extensive experience: he managed the largest GM dealership in the country, Carrefour 440 Chevrolet Pontiac Buick GMC, then spent 17 years at General Motors in sales, marketing, and finance. He also held strategic roles at Hewitt Equipment Ltd. This diverse background gave him a strong understanding of distribution networks and brand dynamics—an essential asset in his role at NAPA.
Innovating within a century-old organization
Guided by honesty and transparency, John has always focused on human and collaborative leadership. Among his most notable achievements, he proudly highlights the “Triple Crown*” earned in 2021 and 2022, a symbol of collective effort that is often invisible. He emphasizes that the launch of Nexdrive, a network dedicated to electric vehicles, reflects this transformation mindset at NAPA. “Today, in 86 garages, Nexdrive represents one of the most significant examples of progress in recent years,” he notes. Combined with major technological investments, this initiative has helped keep NAPA at the forefront of a rapidly evolving market.
As he transitions into an active retirement, John O’Dowd will continue supporting the next generation through mentorship and targeted mandates. His influence will remain deeply embedded in NAPA’s DNA for years to come.
The “Triple Crown” at NAPA represents one of the highest internal recognition levels. Achieving all three in the same year—and repeating it the next—is exceptional.
