Subaru Goes Electric

As part of the Montreal Auto Show, Subaru arrived with not one but four Canadian premieres.

Solterra Returns

The Solterra had mixed success for Subaru. The brand’s first electric vehicle, a twin of the Toyota bZ, faced several technical issues that made sales difficult. To fix that, Subaru and Toyota are bringing a major update for 2026. The new model features a larger battery — from 72.8 kWh to 74.7 kWh — with battery preconditioning and a NACS charging port. The result: 150 kW charging capability at all times thanks to the preconditioning system.

Subaru has also updated the electric motors. Power increases from 215 hp to 338 hp, boosting range from about 360 km to 446 km.

Two More Toyota-Shared Models

Subaru also showcased the Uncharted and Trailseeker EVs at its stand. The Uncharted is basically Subaru’s version of the Toyota C-HR, and the Trailseeker is an electric SUV sister to the Toyota bZ Woodland. Both use the same platform and drivetrain as the Solterra. The Trailseeker produces about 375 hp compared to 338 hp for the Solterra and Uncharted. Estimated range is over 500 km for the Uncharted and around 420 km for the Trailseeker.

Gas Engines Too

The 2026 Subaru Outback was also present, and unlike the electrified models, it keeps its traditional engines. The base continues with the familiar 2.5-L Boxer four-cylinder producing 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. The turbo 2.4-L Boxer returns with 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. All engines are mated to a CVT and Subaru’s signature all-wheel-drive, with X-Mode available on all trims.
