When managing an auto repair shop, everything is a matter of balance. Between the requirements of productivity, quality of work and customer satisfaction, priorities always have to be adjusted. And given this context, one word keeps coming up: performance. But what does this really mean for our teams on a daily basis?
Rethinking performance beyond the numbers
Performance is often associated with the speed of execution or the number of vehicles repaired. However, a successful shop is above all a shop that works in harmony. This requires clear processes, fluid communication between technicians and service advisors, and tools adapted to the reality of the shop floor.
Before investing in new equipment, we sometimes need to review our methods, train our teams and make sure that everyone understands their contribution to the value chain. We also have to find out how things are going on the shop floor and discuss things with our team. What do you need? What would make you more efficient but also happier? The answer might surprise you!
Valuing people
The scarcity of labour reminds us of a simple truth: without our technicians, nothing works. The real strength of a successful shop lies in its team culture. A manager who takes the time to listen, recognize successes, and involve their staff in decisions creates an environment where everyone feels accountable for the outcome. Efficiency then naturally flows from this environment.
Constantly adjusting the focus
Our shops must adapt continuously. New technologies, training, customer expectations: every change is an opportunity to improve. It’s not about revolutionizing everything, it’s about having the flexibility to adjust before performance gaps become problematic.
Sustainable performance is not a race against time. It involves achieving a disciplined balance between quality, profitability, and the well-being of teams. When these elements run smoothly together, our shops become really effective… and above all, efficient.
