PowerCo pushes St. Thomas battery plant back to 2029

Volkswagen’s battery subsidiary delays its Ontario gigafactory by two years, while insisting the project remains central to its North American strategy.

PowerCo Canada, Volkswagen Group’s battery production subsidiary, has confirmed that its plant in St. Thomas, in southwestern Ontario, will not begin operations until 2029, two years later than planned. The announcement came alongside the appointment of Canadian firm EllisDon as the site’s general contractor.

Getting the pace right

According to PowerCo, the new timeline will enable the plant to integrate next-generation battery technology and adjust production to shifting demand. Joel Karlsberg, PowerCo
