The good imperfect boss

Good bosses are the number one factor in employee retention.

Rather than telling you what you should do to be a good manager, here’s a very interesting take on the upside of an imperfect boss from the creator of the blog Leadership Freak.

At the end of the day, bosses are human; they can’t be perfect every time.

5 things my imperfect boss did right :

I worked for a larger-than-life boss with many imperfections. I loved him because he was real.

1. I knew what he was thinking and I knew my value to him.

“The biggest cowards are managers who don’t let people know where they stand.” Jack Welch

2. He offered me opportunities for growth and showed me how to be better – in no uncertain terms.

Not everyone could tolerate his candor, but he made me better.

Avoid ruinous empathy.

3. He expected performance AND wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty with me.

4. He bought lunch.

Generosity builds relationships and trust.

5. He was both loud AND caring.

He was intimidating, but his big heart made up for it.

A warm heart overcomes many flaws.

If you’re imperfect, at least be considerate.
