Think 80/20, Act 30/30, Live 90/10

By Anthony Giagnacovo

At NSD (National Safe Drivers), we use numbers to explain our leadership principles. Why numbers? Because numbers are a universal language. They create common understanding, common goals, and common expectations. There is no translation required.

Our culture is built around three simple principles: Think 80/20, Act 30/30, and Live 90/10.

This article focuses on the foundation of the three: the 80/20 Principle.

Nobody Should Be a 100

The concept is simple: nobody should be a 100.

In many organizations, people strive to become the expert, the decision-maker, or the person with all the answers. While that may sound admirable, it often creates risk. When one person becomes a 100, they become a single point of failure. Knowledge becomes trapped, collaboration decreases, and success becomes dependent on one individual.

Everyone Needs Their 20s

The 80/20 Principle teaches us that everyone needs their 20s.

Your 20s are the trusted people around you who challenge your thinking, validate your assumptions, provide expertise where you may lack experience, and help ensure success. You are not limited to one 20. In fact, the more engaged and capable 20s you have around you, the stronger your chances of success become.

The Responsibility of the 80

What you can only have is one 80.

The 80 is the person ultimately accountable for the outcome. The 80 owns the mission, owns the result, and owns the responsibility. While the 20s provide support, insight, and expertise, the 80 remains accountable.

Focus on the Critical Few

An effective 80 also understands the importance of focus. The 80 should identify the three activities that drive 80% of the desired outcome and concentrate energy on those priorities. Too often, people confuse activity with progress. Great leaders focus on the few things that truly move the needle.

Build a 3×80 Strategy

Finally, every 80 should build a 3×80 strategy. Success rarely follows a single path. Strong leaders develop alternative approaches and contingency plans to achieve their objectives. If one path is blocked, there are already other routes prepared.

Clear Accountability, Strong Collaboration

At NSD, we believe success comes from clear accountability, focused execution, and strong collaboration.

Nobody succeeds alone, but everyone must know who owns the mission.

In future articles, I’ll explore Act 30/30 and Live 90/10 and how these principles help transform leadership, execution, and personal growth.
