Servicing electric vehicles could gradually offer more opportunities for independent repair shops. ZF Aftermarket is expanding its portfolio with solutions designed to service specific components found in electric and hybrid powertrains.

The approach is intended to make targeted component repairs possible in appropriate applications rather than requiring the replacement of an entire assembly.

Solutions for Electrified Powertrain Components

ZF’s expanded offering covers several areas of electrified propulsion systems, including electric motors, hybrid modules, inverters, mechatronic systems and reduction gears used in electric drive units.

The supplier also plans to introduce more than 100 repair kit variants for electric axles.

For the aftermarket, this development is significant. Greater availability of individual repair solutions could allow shops with the proper equipment and training to gradually expand the range of EV services they provide.

New Skills Will Be Required

Parts availability, however, is only one part of the equation. Shops performing these repairs also need the appropriate expertise in diagnostics, high-voltage safety and electrified powertrain systems.

ZF also plans to expand its European portfolio with up to 200 additional part numbers for Chinese vehicle brands by early 2027.

For Canadian shop managers, this is a trend worth watching. As the EV fleet ages, demand for repair options that do not require replacing complete assemblies could become increasingly important to the aftermarket.
