It was during my test drive of the all-new Subaru Forester that something struck me.
In a world where mechanics are increasingly complex and compact, the Subaru Forester shines with its simplicity and ease of access. Whether it’s the starter, the alternator, the accessory belt or even the air conditioning compressor, the Subaru’s mechanics impress us with their accessibility. But how did Subaru manage to combine modern technology with mechanical simplicity?
The flat engine: not so complicated in the end
Thanks to its flat engine, Subaru was able to free up space for all accessories. Basically, it’s as if Subaru installed a table in its engine bay and all that was left to do was put the components on it. Even the oil filter is within easy reach. The spark plugs now have more space. In the past, these were located on the sides of the engine and were placed close to the chassis rails, which made it difficult to replace them. Now, only a few parts need to be removed to access them. In short, we can see that Subaru listens to its mechanics.
Not just the engine bay
Subaru has always had a reputation for offering cars that are easy to maintain, especially when it comes to suspension components. These along with the drivetrain are visible and easily accessible, making diagnostics and repairs more accessible. In short, Subaru has been able to evolve its mechanics over time, making them more accessible than ever to mechanical shops.
