Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a real headache for independent auto repair shops. Faced with this reality, a new type of business has emerged: mobile calibration services. 

With 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, Amir Farrokh recently acquired a mobile calibration company. 

 
“As a trainer in the field of bodywork, it was obvious to me that the cost of equipment was a real financial burden for shops. So, I decided to be part of the solution and get into mobile calibration,” he explains. Relying on the network developed over the course of his career and his ties with ICAR certification programs, he founded the Centre de calibration des Laurentides, in partnership with the Centre de calibration de la Capitale. 

Now entering their third year of operation, the company already has four mobile units covering the North Shore of Montreal. It mainly uses the Autel ADAS portable platform, while using the original software of the manufacturers via a J2534 interface if necessary. 

Fast, turnkey service 

The objective: to offer a simple and fast service to workshops, within a maximum of 24 hours. The technician travels directly to the customer to perform the calibration, thus eliminating the need to tow their vehicle to the dealership. If the customer’s facilities do not allow the calibration to be carried out, a centralized location is available in the covered territory. 

Mandatory pre- and post-scan  

Recently, manufacturers and insurers have been requiring a pre- and post-repair scan to make sure that driver assistance systems are safe. In order to meet this new standard, Amir’s company offers a scanning service. 

A response to market needs 

Amir and his partners were able to quickly identify the needs of the industry and address the lack of resources for ADAS system calibration. Their mobile and flexible model offers independent shops an efficient and safety-compliant solution. This is a great demonstration of local innovation that allows many shops to remain competitive in a sector undergoing major transformation.
