Global consumers are reassessing automotive priorities, according to Deloitte’s 2026 study of 28,500 respondents across 27 markets.
Internal combustion engines dominate: 61% of Americans prefer them versus 7% for battery electric. Hybrids capture 26% interest, balancing economy and practicality.
Affordability drives decisions. Fuel costs motivate EV consideration, but range anxiety, charging time and price remain barriers. China shows 20% EV intent; Japan leads hybrids at 43%.
Brand loyalty weakens: over half of U.S. buyers would switch brands, prioritizing quality and pricing.
Connected services appeal, yet data privacy concerns persist. Half of consumers would keep vehicles longer with regular over-the-air updates, with most willing to pay premium for this feature.
The market reflects transition, where traditional powertrains, emerging technologies and shifting priorities coexist as buyers increasingly focus on value, practicality and trust in automotive experiences.
