At the helm of Groupe Desharnais, Denis Desharnais represents the third generation of a family business now entering its fourth generation. Here is a look back at the journey of a leader who successfully transformed a legacy into a true engine for growth.
A Leader Shaped by Family Tradition
When Denis took over leadership of Groupe Desharnais in 1994, he inherited far more than a business — he inherited a mission. Founded in 1949 by his grandfather Philibert and later strengthened by his father Fernand, the company was built on values of integrity, closeness, and customer service. Denis continued that tradition with a clear ambition: to modernize the business without ever compromising its family DNA.
Driven by a long-term vision, he quickly focused on structured growth, innovation, and people development. For him, the success of a company depends first and foremost on the people behind it. This philosophy became one of the cornerstones of Groupe Desharnais.
A Winning Synergy
A strong and complementary leadership team soon formed around him. Denis oversaw purchasing and supplier relations, while Vice President Réjean Lachance managed administration. Jean-Guy Roy, General Manager, led operations and retail centres.
The opening of the Lebourgneuf Mega Centre in 2003 marked a major turning point for the company. The large, versatile complex was designed to meet the needs of an evolving customer base. This development perfectly reflected the Desharnais vision: offer more, offer better, and build sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting the company’s future growth.
Strategic and Controlled Expansion
Over the years, Denis Desharnais led several strategic expansions that strengthened the Group’s presence in key markets. The company first expanded its Heavy-Duty division in Quebec City and Lévis in 2011, followed by broader expansion into Thetford Mines in 2014 and Charlevoix in 2018.
More recently, the integration of Pneus St-David further strengthened the Group’s position on Quebec City’s South Shore, confirming a well-planned and disciplined acquisition strategy.
This growth was accompanied by continuous modernization efforts, including service diversification, technological investments, and facility optimization.
A Successful Transition to the Fourth Generation
In recent years, Denis carefully prepared the transition to the fourth generation. Today, his daughters Claudia and Mélanie, along with his niece Marika, hold key executive roles within a committed and high-performing leadership team. Even his granddaughter Victoria is already showing interest in the business.
“It fills me with pride,” he says.
Today, Denis Desharnais mainly serves as a mentor, ensuring continuity while supporting the next generation.
He explains: “I’ve always seen myself as someone who brings people together. I enjoy creating work environments where people feel good.”
Human connection, respect, and closeness — both with customers and employees — remain at the heart of the values he continues to pass on. As he says with a touch of humour: “I’m sitting in the back seat, while still keeping a close eye on the road…”
