Nissan Motor Co. is making a bold move to challenge Tesla’s dominance in autonomous driving. By early 2028, the automaker plans to launch a $4,000 “hands-off, eyes-on” system with no geographic restrictions. This next-generation ProPilot technology, powered by AI, aims to replicate the supervised point-to-point capability of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving.

To maintain affordability, Nissan is pivoting toward a camera-based approach, reducing reliance on expensive lidar sensors. A strategic partnership with UK-based Wayve Technologies, backed by Nvidia, is central to this effort. Wayve’s self-learning AI improves with every mile driven, processing data primarily through cameras.

While testing is currently focused on an electric Ariya prototype, Nissan intends to scale this system across its core lineup, including the Rogue, Pathfinder, and Armada. By prioritizing a lower price point and AI scalability, Nissan hopes to democratize advanced autonomous features in North America and Japan.
