The Transformation of Leadership in Collision Repair Shops

By Rejean Lortie

The Weight of Leadership

Who better than collision repair shop owners to understand the importance of productivity, efficiency and execution in achieving quality results? In the past, strong technical skills alone were enough to meet the expectations of the trade. On-time delivery and the quality of workmanship were then the main performance indicators for shop owners.

However, technological evolution — such as the introduction of water-based paints, the increasing complexity and variety of vehicle structures and components, and the constant pressure from insurers — has reshaped industry requirements. Insurers themselves must also deliver flawless customer service, in line with today’s increasingly high consumer expectations.

From Shop Owner to Manager

The shop owner of yesterday has become the modern manager. Today, they are responsible for effectively leading their team. Leadership has become a driver of engagement, discipline and pride in doing quality work. They are often on the front line when challenges arise, acting as a mentor or “big brother” within the team.

Through proximity and knowledge-sharing, they help foster autonomy and confidence among team members. They embody the old saying: “Teach a person to fish rather than give them the fish,” as delegating responsibility helps reveal people’s full potential.

Team Meetings: A Driver of Cohesion and Performance

Team meetings play a central role in strengthening cohesion within the shop. They are not only an opportunity to share common goals, but also to review both individual and team performance.

To be effective, these meetings must be carefully prepared, kept concise, and allow every team member to express themselves in a respectful environment.

These moments of exchange are essential to present results, discuss challenges and solutions, and clarify upcoming objectives. In this way, team meetings help mobilize everyone around shared priorities and contribute to continuous performance improvement.

Winning as a Team

A good employer involves their team in challenges and values their contribution, strengthening the sense of belonging.
